How
it all began
Hi, I’m Terry the guy behind The Artisan Kitchen Knives
Originally from the UK I moved to Austria with my partner Nicola and our 2 dog’s Buddie & Inka. We moved in 2015 to renovate an old house into a Bed & Breakfast and this is where my journey of making knives began.
I started to make small things for the B&B like furniture, a pool table and art for the walls. It got to the point where Nic would say, “We could do with a new cabinet” and I would reply “Don’t worry! I’ll make one”. So after constant reminders that we should buy a new knife I decided to have a go at making one.
To start with I improvised on the tools and equipment side of things. I used to fasten the hand held sander into a vice and grind steel for hours into something that resembled a knife shape. I experimented with different methods of dying or finishing wood, one attempt lead me to blowing up a fish tank full of green dye in our kitchen…… (Nic was not impressed)
But without all these experiences I wouldn’t be where I am today doing something I love.
2018 was the turning point for me and making my knives. Before this point I would make the odd knife for friends and family members. It wasn’t until someone said, why don’t to try and sell a few on the local Christmas market. So, I spent a few weeks locked in my workshop, grinding away and made a dozen knives to sell. And wow! What a shock. I sold out and came back with many orders. I was over the moon, and since then I have made knives for professional chefs and food enthusiast all over the world.
